The music in a film is a vital element which distinguishes the genre of the film, but is also important for adding tension and atmosphere, which allows the audience to feel part of the film.
In such films as Star Wars, Batman, and Harry Potter, the soundtrack has made a long lasting impression on the audience, and they are immediately recognizable from the music.
Music is essential in the genre horror as it is able to add an eerie atmosphere, and also helps the intentional delays within the films, to be made more effective. The fear factor in almost any horror film would decrease dramatically if the auditory features were removed or altered to something not befitting a horror film.
The music must be influential upon the action on screen, and it must comprehend with the directors intentions and interpretations of the film, in order for the music to be effective.
The key focus in our film, in which music will be the most essential is the scene in which there will be a pan of a forest. Music is a central focus point in this scene, as there is minimal action included, and therefore music is needed to keep the audience engaged in the film. Orchestral music would be suitable, as it is not over dramatic, and does not lose attention to the plot. It is difficult to create a piece of music from scratch, as we are unable to retain equipment of the right sort, however, we are able to search through CD's of music which is not copyrighted, and use this for our piece. Before searching through CD's, I have researched into horror music, and what it entitles. Influences from different classical horror music are able to help our piece to be fitted with the suitable tune, and also this will distinguish our film from various different existing teen horror's. Although there are many different types of horror film music which could be used, it is imperative that we should not use over dramatic music, which many horror films are subdued to.
This music would be suitable for the forest scene, as it gives the realistic impression of the sound of diegetic wind, and it also includes the soundtrack of a crying woman, linking in with the plot of the film. Although we are unable to use this, for copyright reasons, we should try to create a soundtrack alike this one, as it is appropriate for our film.
However, this is not appropriate to use as a distinguishing theme, as it does not involve any particular tune, which will be recognizable to the film. Therefore, we should try and also create an original tune for our particular film, as this will create realism, and belief in the storyline.
